In the Kingdom of Ridill lives a genius magician known to be the first person to ever use chantless magic. However, the truth is that the Silent Witch developed chantless magic due to being too shy—preferring to live on a mountain top, far from society. Her secluded lifestyle changes, though, when a fellow sage tasks her to covertly defend the second prince, Felix Arc Ridill, from attempts on his life. Unfortunately, that means she will have to go undercover as a student at Serendia Academy. Between guard duty and her social anxiety, Monica is facing her most difficult mission to date.

The Yellow River, Yangtze River, and Lancang River originate from the same source, and three families known as "Water Evils" (Ding, Jiang, and Yi) live along the river. What are "Water Evils"? They can move freely in the water and possess the skills of geomancy, feng shui, and treasure hunting. Yi Sa, the last Water Evil of the Yi family, runs an "underwater bank" business along the Lancang River. During a "Golden Fortress" excavation, Yi Sa encounters and saves Zong Hang. To uncover the truth of what happened and to save himself, Yi Sa trains Zong Hang to become a professional Water Evil, and together with Ding Yudie, a Water Evil from the Ding family, the three enter the "Ancestral Golden Fortress."

Atsuko "Akko-chan" Kagami (known variously as "Stilly," "Caroline," or "Julie" in Western versions of the anime) is an energetic elementary school girl who has an affinity for mirrors. One day, her favorite mirror which was given to Akko by her mother (or in some versions, by her father, as a present from India) is broken, and she prefers to bury it in her yard rather than throw it to the trash can. In her dreams, she is contacted by a spirit (or in some cases the Queen of the Mirror Kingdom) who is moved that the little girl would treat the mirror so respectfully and not simply throw it away. Akko-chan is then given the gift of a magical mirror and taught an enchantment that will allow her to transform into anything she wishes.
